10月21日、ＯＴＥＣの来場者数が、今年の4月9日から数えて612人※を突破しました。この「612」という数字は何の数字かご存知ですか？
そう、ここ久米島の深層水を取水している深さが612mなのです。久米島町では、この水深612mにちなんで6月12日を「海洋深層水の日」と定めており、毎年イベントも開催しています。
今年のイベントでは、ＯＴＥＣのオープニングセレモニーとして「通電式」も同時に行い、多くの関係者、見学者が訪れました。
ＯＴＥＣがスタートして半年余りですが、こんなに多くの方々に見に来ていただいて感謝です。「このＯＴＥＣを見学するために久米島に来ました」という方も少なくありません。視察や観光、学習など様々な目的で、県外からのお客様も多いです。

The Okinawa OTEC Demonstration Facility celebrates more than 600 visitors since the opening just a few months ago. The OTEC Facility officially opened in June, with an initialization ceremony that brought guests from all over the world.
In Okinawa, we bring deep sea water from a depth of 612 meters. This lead us to our unique milestone, which we just met. We are thankful so many interested parties have come to learn more about OTEC. We are currently the only plant in the world producing electricity, and by sharing what we learn we can ensure this important technology grows through to commercialization for a future of renewable, clean, and stable energy.
