This staff blog of the Okianwa Prefecture Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Demonstration Facility will be our primary method for sharing news and local information concerning the OTEC facility on Kume Island.
The name of this blog comes from an idea the late Guy Toyama, an activist and supporter of OTEC, shared during a trip to Kume Island to celebrate the sister city agreements between Kume Island and Hawaii County. Aloha from Hawaii, and Haisai from Okianwa are both greetings with the warm cultural overtones of both places. We hope to continue Guy’s mission to make OTEC a reality for the world.
「アロハイサイ」へようこそ!
このスタッフブログでは、沖縄県海洋温度差発電（OTEC）実証設備のスタッフが、ＯＴＥＣに関するニュースや実証設備とその周辺での出来事などを発信していきます。
ブログの名前「AloHaisai（アロハイサイ）」とは、ハワイの挨拶「アロハ」と、沖縄の挨拶「ハイサイ」を組み合わせた造語です。この言葉は、2011年9月の第2回沖縄－ハワイ海洋エネルギーワークショップにて、海洋深層水の研究施設を持つ久米島町とハワイのコナ市との間で姉妹都市協定を結んだ際のハワイ州立自然エネルギー研究所（NELHA） ガイ・トオヤマ氏の挨拶から生まれました。
ガイ・トオヤマ氏はハワイ生まれの日系4世。関係者の間を奔走しながら沖縄とハワイを結び付け、沖縄県の海洋温度差発電の実現に希望を与えてくれました。
しかし、残念ながら彼は、2012年11月に42歳の若さでこの世を去りました。
私たちは、ガイ・トオヤマ氏の遺志を継いで、OTECが持続可能な社会に貢献できるよう努めていきたいと考えています。
